MUSIC + SOUND SUBMISSIONS

The music is still canned—prepared in some way—food is not. Eventually making music together will become like food and dwellings are now. Many gardens will begin.

— Maryanne Amacher, from Preface to Long Distance Music

(Maryanne Amacher: Selected Writings and Interviewseds. Amy Cimini and Bill Dietz)

music + sound will be dedicated to publishing writing by those working in the domain of music and sound, whose practices actively engage with the complex social, technological, and cultural mediations that surround the act of listening. Recognizing the impossibility of documenting and presenting musical work once it is decontextualized from its initial assemblage, we are particularly interested in publishing work by experimental music practitioners who seek to complement their artistic output with rigorously intentional texts that articulate the aims, execution, and/or results of a given work—whether by means of a score, an essay, a reflection, etc—addressing the work’s historical contingencies as well as the material and social challenges that shape it.

Some general guidelines:

– Supplementary media can be interwoven into the writing in the following formats: .mp3, .mp4, .jpg, .png, and .mov files. Make note of where you’d like this material to appear in writing — if unspecified, we’ll put all the attached media at the top of the article.
– Please add captions if you have any information or text you’d like displayed below the media.
– We may accept broader writing on music and sound, but prioritize writing by practitioners about their own work.
– We only accept full pieces — no pitches, please.
– Please note our house style (capitalisation, use of expression marks, lack of indentation for paragraphs, etc) –– if accepted, your piece will be edited according to our house style without further consultation.
