CHANGE[S]

By the time we come back from the summer hiatus, a few things will have changed at minor lits

The most significant is that after five and half years with us, and three in charge of Essays & Features, Frank Garrett will be leaving. Frank’s contributions to the magazine, both on screen and behind the scenes, have been enormous. The rigour, care and discernment he brought to his role as Essays editor is clear for anyone to see, but more than that, his commitment to minor lits’ ideals has been vital to everything we have done over the last few years. Writing in community, in solidarity, in the spirit of experimentation and with the aim of creating space for voices that exist outside the mainstream, in all of that Frank is exemplary, collaborating with humour, sensitivity, and a healthy sprinkling of fuck-you salt. We are truly sorry to see him go.

The good news, however, is that as he takes on the dignified moniker of Editor-at-Large, his column, ‘Better Shopping Through Living’, will continue.

We are also delighted to be able to announce that Joseph Schreiber will be taking on editing duties for the now renamed ESSAYS section. A previous contributor to minor lits, and former editor at 3AM Magazine, we are beyond excited to see what Joseph’s vision for non-fiction will be as the output of the site evolves.

As alluded to earlier, under Joseph’s editorship, the section will now be titled simply ESSAYS, part of a broader restructuring with the aim of better organising what we do. Experimental & Poetry will become EXPERIMENTAL, and we will be adding a new section: EXTRACTS. There, we will publish excerpts from published and upcoming works of all genres, allowing any writer or press looking to promote their work to submit to us directly via our Oleada submissions platform.

minor lits is run by a (very) small team of volunteers. Consolidating extracted works in this way will allow for a better, more coherent, and less onerous process, meaning we are ultimately able to publish a wider variety of texts, more efficiently. All unsolicited inquiries will be redirected to Oleada.

FICTION has been our backbone in the last couple of years, and though it will continue to be central, the plan going forward is to publish less of it. Though there will be less, the intention is that this will allow us to publish longer pieces (up to 5,000 words), and provide greater editorial input than our current scheduling permits. We will be open to fiction submissions throughout August.

EXPERIMENTAL will also be open to submissions throughout August, while REVIEWS and INTERVIEWS will remain open on a rolling basis.

Finally, coming up in October we will be hosting the first MINOR INCIDENT event. We recently announced the venue – Le Lieu Dit in Paris’ 20th Arrondissement. For news and updates on the participants and more, make sure to follow @minorincident24 on X/Twitter. If you are unable to attend, but would like to make a contribution to the event, you can do so via KOFI.

We have a tonne of great writing lined up la rentrée in September, with our Paris series, fiction, essays, works in translation and much more. Keep your eyes on us, and up the minor!
